Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Sweating is a normal bodily function that helps the body regulate its temperature and hydrate the skin. Hyperhidrosis is when an individual sweats in excess and their sweating causes disruption to their normal daily activities and is a serious consideration that can affect their relationships , careers and self-esteem.

Excessive sweating can be embarrassing and complicate business, social and personal interactions. Severe cases can have serious practical consequences making it difficult for people who suffer from hyperhidrosis to hold a pen, grip a steering wheel or shake hands.

What is the cause of hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a genetic condition that affects 3-5% of the population. Affecting both men and women of all backgrounds and ages, the excessive sweating can occur at any time and does not require triggers such as heat or anxiety or stress, though these can exacerbate the sweat response. Uncontrolled sweating can occur in various parts of the body including the hands, feet or underarms and is the result of overactive sweat glands.

Effective treatment of Hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is effectively treated with BTX, a natural purified protein, that is injected into the problem areas. BTX targets the excessive sweating at its source by blocking the “sweat” signal that is sent to the sweat glands stopping the production of sweat in the treated areas. The injections are with a fine needle and discomfort is minimized with topical anesthetic cream and ice. Over the first week the effects of the treatment becomes evident with perspiration levels dropping dramatically.

The first treatment lasts an average of 7 months .However, the amount of time the BTX remains effective may vary from person to person.

Are there any side effects?
In addition to treating Hyperhidrosis BTX is used to treat a variety of conditions, including cerebral palsy in children and movement disorders of the neck ,head and face.

As with all medicines, BTX may have some side effects. These are usually temporary and localized to the area injected. They include pain at the injection site, hot flushes and a transient arm weakness and a perceived increase in sweating in the areas treated.
